Clinical Research
The FDA cleared i-Lipo laser weight loss technology has been thoroughly researched in several clinical studies. We have provided some of them below for your review.
Treatment Outcomes
Despite low level lasers being presented as a possible adjunct to liposuction procedures in 2001, scientific studies of the exact mechanism are still lacking in conclusive evidence. Initial research report the benefits of low level laser therapy (LLLT) to stimulate the release of fatty acids from the cell, facilitating the extraction of the adipose tissue during lipoplasty, shortening operating times, reducing post treatment effects and the need for analgesia for the patient. Several years later this effect of stimulating the release of the stored contents of adipose cells has been applied to non-invasive fat reduction or body shaping treatments with a variety of devices offered on the market. Clinical research for this non-invasive option is lacking, with minimal studies currently published using controlled and large population groups to demonstrate effect. Despite this, these cold laser devices still prove to be a popular treatment opportunity within the global aesthetic market.
Low Level Laser for Body Reshaping
The ability of low level lasers to cause photomodulation of individual adipose cells so that they release their contents without damage to the cell or surrounding tissues provided has been successfully and safely used for several years, first as an adjunct treatment to reduce the post treatment swelling and discomfort of liposuction procedures and more recently on their own as a non-invasive body reshaping treatment option. The purpose of this study was to report the ability of the i-Lipo laser diode system to be used as a fat reduction and body reshaping system, offering patients immediate and long-term changes to specific problem fatty areas.
Investigation of the Effects
This report investigates the effects on circumference measurements of various combinations of active or inactive treatment pad and LS probe diodes. The treatment outcome on circumference measurement is compared to effects of a normal typical ilipo treatment procedure on the abdominal area of the body. As an additional investigation, comparison is also made to “placebo pads” intended for use in blinded placebo controlled studies to investigate the effectiveness of ilipo treatments.
Concept of Fractional Fat Reduction
Low level laser therapy (LLLT) for fat reduction treatments uses a mechanism where laser energy targets the mitochondria of the adipose cell, temporarily stimulating the electron transport mechanism within this organelle. The primary outcome of this action is the temporary increase in teh production of ATP (energy) within the cell. Secondary effects of this cascade acceleration is the increase of H+ ions migrating across the mitochondrial membrane into the cell interior, decreasing the pH. Since the body strives for homostasis, the cell responds to this increased concentration of H+ ions by opening transport channels and pores in the cell membrane allowing the redistribution of ions across the cell wall to redress the pH balance.
Body Shaping Comparison
This report is intended to describe and compare three of the current widely used technologies within the medical and aesthetic communities to achieve body shaping or fat reduction treatments: invasive laser lipolysis, non-invasive low level laser therapy and ultrasound. The key outcome of all of these treatments is the reduction in size and or destruction of adipose (fat) cells in targeted anatomical locations to moderate the amount of body fat stored there.
